Deputy Director, California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development
Since May 2017, Awinash Bawle has served as the Deputy Director for International Affairs and Business Development at the State of California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) in Sacramento. In this capacity, he oversees and coordinates the promotion and development of two-way international trade and investment opportunities for the world’s 5th largest economy, across a wide range of industry sectors, geographic regions, and initiatives. As a part of this portfolio, he serves as a Board Member on the Los Angeles area Regional Export Council.
Prior to his tenure in Sacramento, Mr. Bawle spent over seven years serving as an international trade specialist in the Office of South Asia at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. In this capacity, he helped reduce U.S. industry trade barriers to India, and to expand market access there in the infrastructure, energy and environment, and financial services sectors. Mr. Bawle also undertook two temporary rotations while at Commerce: first, working as an economics officer for the State Department at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, India, where he focused on financial inclusion; and second, as a commercial attaché to the U.S. Executive Director’s office at the World Bank, where he focused on helping U.S. industry understand the global carbon credit market.
Mr. Bawle holds a Master’s degree in International Policy Studies from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, which included one semester as a visiting scholar at the Jawaharlal Nehru University School of International Studies in New Delhi, India. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, and is a native of Detroit, Michigan.
